Sulphur in petrochemical products
Sulphur is a naturally occurring component in crude oil and plays a crucial role in the petroleum industry. As an impurity, it must be removed during refining to prevent corrosion, protect catalysts, and reduce harmful emissions. XRF spectrometry is widely used for sulfur analysis due to its straightforward sample preparation.

Additives and traces in lube oils
Lubricants help keep machinery clean and ensure optimal performance, even under severe operating conditions. They are formulated by blending additive packages into base oils, with XRF spectrometry commonly used for quality control. The four key types of lubricants are automotive engine oils, marine engine oils, industrial oils and transmission oils.
Analyzing used oils provides critical insights, helping determine whether the correct oil was used and identifying wear elements and contaminants. This analysis can reveal increased wear rates and potential abnormal operating conditions, aiding in maintenance and failure prevention.
Biofuel
Renewable fuels and biofuels are becoming increasingly important in the automotive fuel market. Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), primarily derived from vegetable oil, is commonly blended with diesel fuel at concentrations of 5% up to 20%.
Recycled vegetable oil from the food industry is also used in biofuel production as a cost-effective alternative to fresh vegetable oil. To ensure compliance with industry specifications, elemental analysis is essential for pure FAME, used vegetable oil, reprocessed vegetable oil and biofuel blends.
